Felicitated: DPCC president J. P. Agarwal, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and MP Sajjan Kumar at a function to honour Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy in New Delhi on Thursday. NEW DELHI: Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy on Thursday said the order passed by the Central Government for stopping sealing and demolition operations in the Capital till December 31, 2008, and also to begin de-sealing would stand the scrutiny of the courts as it was within the ambit of the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act. ‘BJP spreading rumours’Speaking at a Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee function where he was felicitated for getting the order passed, Mr. Reddy said the Bharatiya Janata Party was spreading rumours that the order would not stand the scrutiny of the courts. He said the views of the apex court had been given due weightage and respect before the order was passed. The Minister said the Congress would not do anything to destroy the character of Delhi which has been built over the centuries. The Minister also assured Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit that 1,406 unauthorised colonies, the list of which was handed over to Centre by the State Government on Wednesday, would be regularised soon. Addressing the gathering, Ms. Dikshit appealed to the party workers to fan out to various areas of the Capital and spread the good word about the order. She said the regularisation of 1,406 unauthorised colonies would benefit nearly 40 lakh people. Expressing his gratitude to Congress president Sonia Gandhi for taking the initiative that led to the order that would bring mental and material relief to lakhs of people, DPCC president J. P. Agarwal said the BJP was only interested in gaining political mileage and not in the good of the people. He pointed out that it was the only party that had opposed the bringing of such an order. Earlier, amid slogan shouting by party workers, Ms. Dikshit presented a bouquet to Mr. Reddy, while Mr. Agarwal presented him with a shawl as a mark of gratitude for stopping sealing and demolitions in the Capital. The DPCC president also “thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the decision that established once again that Congress always cared about the good the common man”.
