The National Law Commission’s suggestion that the marriageable age for boys and girls be fixed uniformly at 18 (reducing it for boys from 21) is unfortunate. It is actually time to raise the minimum age for marriage. The Commission’s suggestion, if implemented, will be detrimental to the wellbeing of the nation. It is astonishing that psycho-socio reasoning is all but absent in the recommendation. K. Beena Mary Joseph, Kozhikode The proposal to reduce the marriage age for boys is retrograde and should not be accepted by the government. On the one hand, the country is struggling to control population growth and, on the other, we have such proposals from the learned members of the Commission who seem to have spared no thought to the enormous pressure on our resources. V. Padmanabhan, Bangalore I feel the Commission has made a prudent suggestion. Just as the minimum age for exercising the right to vote is 18, the marriageable age should also be the same for boys and girls. Anindita Acharya, Dhenkanal At a time when misuse of the Internet and cellphones by students is increasing alarmingly, such suggestions are unnecessary and morally unjustified. S. Ramakrishnasayee, Ranipet
