Mormugao triumphs

VISAKHAPATNAM: Last year’s runner-up Mormugao won the 32nd all-India Major Ports football championship, beating Cochin 2-0 in the final at the Port Stadium here on Wednesday.

Both teams had a strong defence and the match was confined to the midfield though Mormugao enjoyed an upper hand. It had two good chances of scoring in the first half, but its forwards missed the target.

Mormugao’s stopper-back Bruno Fernandes scored the first goal in the 59th minute, while Jameson Noronha scored the second in the 77th. Host Visakhapatnam finished third.

Special awards: Best goalkeeper: Douglas (Tuticorin); Best defender: Godwin Mirinda (Visakhapatnam); Best midfielders: Steven Baptista (Mormugao), V. Siva Prasad (Visakhapatnam), Anoj (Cochin); Best forward: Kedaranath (Paradip); Best disciplined team: Paradip. — Special Correspondent
