VIJAYAWADA: Grandmaster Koneru Humpy, on her return from the Corus tournament that concluded at Wijk Aan Zee (The Netherlands) recently, said that she needed to widen her openings while playing black. Speaking to The Hindu on Thursday, the World No. 2 in the women’s section felt that she lost three crucial rounds due to fragile openings. “Out of a possible 13, I garnered 5.5 points. As I have three important tournaments coming up in the next four months, I will be concentrating on openings with black as well as middle and endgames along with my father-cum-coach Ashok,” she said. Humpy would be leaving for Vadodara in the third week of February where she will be training along with her ONGC teammates for the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board’s inter-institutional tournament scheduled for March. “My emphasis will be on the round-robin category 13 tournament in Spain in April and the women’s World championship at San Luis (Argentina) in June. As the World championship is held on a knock-out format, I need better preparation as one mistake will eliminate me from the race. This is the third time I am taking part in the championship after 2005 and 2006,” Humpy said. She regarded Russian GMs as highly competitive as they played aggressively, keeping the rival king as target. — Sports Reporter
