96,940 voters have been added to the revised voters’ list in the district Election Commission constantly monitoring the revision work DAVANGERE: Startling lapses were discovered while checking electoral rolls in the district recently. The previous list had entries indicating that 60 to 150 voters resided in one house. In one case, the names of 200 voters were listed under a non-existent address at Nituavalli Extension here. In another case, over 150 voters had the same address in Nijalingappa Layout. Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi, who is the District Election Officer, conducted a personal investigation after being informed about the lapses. He found the names of many non-existent voters and, in some cases, non-existent addresses on the list, mostly in Davangere and Harpanahalli sub-divisions in the district. It was also found that leaders of various political parties had enrolled their names both in their native villages and in Davangere. The name of Pampapathy, a communist leader and former MLA who died five years ago, was also found on the previous list. As many as 2,32,759 non-existent voters have now been removed from the voters’ list. The names of 40,590 voters, whose names were found on the list though they are dead, have been deleted. As many as 96,940 voters have been added to the revised list. The number of names deleted from the voters’ list in different places are: Harpanahalli - 25,426 ; Harihar - 36,617; Davangere - 80,024; Maykonda - 34898; Jagalur - 18,858; Chennagiri - 19,290 and Honnali - 17,646. The recent civic elections were held based on the previous voters’ list. The Election Commission has instructed officials to check the electoral rolls in their respective districts. The commission has been constantly monitoring the day-to-day reports from each district in the State. It has also issued a stern warning that lapses found in the revised list will not be tolerated. Work hitRoutine work in government offices has been disrupted as most of the officials, including Assistant Commissioners, Deputy Commissioner, tahsildars and village accountants, have been assigned various duties related to checking the voters’ list. Assistant Commissioner of Davangere division Janaki and Assistant Commissioner of Harpanahalli division Latha Kumari told The Hindu that they had been not able to attend to their routine work because they were busy with electoral duties.
