Panel chief warns action against erring officials To ask for enhancement of budgetary allocation Kakinada: The AP Legislature Committee on Welfare of Backward Classes opined that the rule of reservation for BCs should be implemented in privateinstitutions for jobs in return for the benefits enjoyed by them and, the Government should take punitive action in the event of failure by the respective institutions to comply with the norms. The committee has also, in response to representations received during its review meeting here on Thursday, decided to recommend provision of reservation for home guards belonging to the BCs in the recruitment of police constables. Announcing these measures at a press conference here on Thursday, committee chairman Baswaraju Saraiah said that the rosters of all government departments are being regularly examined to ensure that reservations are provided for the BCs and warned that departmental action would be taken against erring officials. The committee has made some other recommendations including payment of scholarships for BCs throughout the year like as in the case of SCs and STs (the BCs are at present getting scholarships for 10 months only), opening of a BC study circle in district headquarters and two in big districts like East Godavari, prompt payment of rents for private premises of BC welfare hostels and provision of adequate bank linkage to PMRY units, which has drastically come down in E.G district due to preference being given to Rajiv Yuvasakti scheme. Welfare activitiesAs regards welfare activities for BCs, Saraiah that the Government will be asked to enhance the budgetary allocations for BCs and ensure that the targeted sections are able to derive the benefits. Saraiah said that the committee was of the view that the Government has to mitigate the adverse impact of the entry of big industrial houses into certain small businesses on which some sections of BCs are heavily dependent for their livelihoods. Both financial and logistical support should be given to such vulnerable sections. Committee members MLAs Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu and M. Venkateswara Rao, MLCs G. Thippe Swami, B. Narayana Rao, P. Subba Reddy and Ratna Kumari spoke in the review meeting earlier.
