Congress seniors call on PM

Press for immediate decision on statehood for the region

‘Development plank will not help party’

YSR loyalists call on Vora, Dwivedi

HYDERABAD: Senior Congress leaders from Telangana on Thursday called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press for creation of a separate State.

A 15-member delegation led by Congress Working Committee (CWC) member G. Venkataswamy met the Prime Minister and explained to him the fast changing political scenario in the State and the growing demand for a separate Telangana.

They said that the Congress had to immediately take a decision on statehood for the region, as the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) was growing stronger by each passing day. Further delay on the statehood issue would cause embarrassment to the party and it would be difficult for the Congress to face the next elections.

‘Sentiment strong’

They said that the Telangana sentiment was so strong that the development slogan would not help the party. They urged him to impress upon party president Sonia Gandhi to take a favourable decision.

The delegation comprised APSRTC chairman M.Satyanarayana Rao, Telangana Regional Development Board chairman V. Purushottam Reddy, MLCs K.R. Amos, M.Manik Rao, Palvai Goverdhan Reddy, B.Kamalakar Rao and former PCC president P. Narsa Reddy and others. Briefing reporters after the meeting, Mr. Amos expressed satisfaction at the response given by the Prime Minister. He said Dr. Singh had promised to bring their views to the notice of the party president.

Loyalists’ stand

Meanwhile, loyalists of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy called on CWC members Motilal Vora and Janardhan Dwivedi and presented a status paper on the development in Telangana after the Congress government came to power in the State. They insisted that development should continue before a decision was taken on statehood.
