NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party says law and order in Nagaland has deteriorated after President’s Rule was imposed last month, and the situation is not conducive to a free and fair poll. Drawing the Election Commission’s attention to the issue, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, in-charge of Nagaland affairs in the BJP, stopped short of asking for postponement of the poll due in early March. Mr. Rudy took a dig at the Congress for lodging a formal complaint against him with the Commission for criticising the Governor and his administration. He said the BJP would contest about 25 seats in the 60-member Assembly. While the names of about 20 candidates were announced, the selection for the other seats would be done shortly. Alliance, if any, would be made “post-poll,” Mr. Rudy indicated even as he claimed some “understanding” with the Nagaland People’s Front. Mr. Rudy indicated that besides party president Rajnath Singh and Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi would campaign in the State, where Christians constitute more than 95 per cent of the population. In the last Assembly election, the BJP won seven seats.
