Batting for urban poor
The city planners boasting of transforming Hyderabad into a world class city with major infrastructure development works got a reality check. “What is development if it does not include every section of society?” asked members of National Urban Development Struggle Committee which met in the city the other day . Attended by well-known rights activists like Medha Patkar and others, the urban poor got their say projected through this meeting.
The speakers across different cities made it pretty clear that while none would oppose development, it should not be at the cost of poorer sections of society. A point many pedestrians would immediately relate to in terms of city traffic. Several roads have been widened in city. But for whose benefit? Whatever little space was there for pedestrians, it had disappeared ironically after widening, they say.
With cars and vehicles taking every inch of road, pedestrians can neither walk nor cross the road these days, they quip.
