SAFETY CONCERN: A girl crosses the road near Irumbuliyur, a challenging task, say residents. — .

TAMBARAM: A 48-year-old man was killed on the spot and two others were injured when a speeding mini bus ploughed into a group of people waiting to cross Grand Southern Trunk Road at Irumbuliyur near Tambaram on Wednesday night.

Residents of Irumbuliyur pelted stones at the vehicle. Tambaram Traffic Police (Investigation) identified the victim as M.Munusamy, a resident of Vivekanandar Street in Irumbuliyur.

Working as a security guard at the National Highways Authority of India’s subway (under construction to link Grand Southern Trunk Road with Chennai Bypass), he was returning home after work.

He had crossed the road and was waiting in the centre beside steel barricades and concrete maidens, when the accident took place.

While Munusamy died instantly, Nancy and another unidentified person sustained injuries, but were out of danger.

Angered over the accident, a group of people pelted stones at the vehicle, damaging its windshields, windows, doors and lights.

They said that Wednesday’s death of the 48-year-old man was the latest in a series of fatal accidents on the stretch of GST Road between the flyover and the Irumbuliyur bus stop, a distance of only about 250 metres.

Nil illumination, narrow road, overspeeding and reckless driving had caused these accidents on this stretch, residents told reporters.

Though traffic police had placed a couple of barricades to keep a check on the speed of the vehicles descending from the flyover, they hardly serve any purpose, the residents said.

Widening of GST Road till Irumbuliyur flyover, installation of high mast lamps and deploying traffic police till late in the night could reduce the accident, they added.
