SAARC Congress on ‘canine practice’ begins
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: A three-day SAARC Congress on ‘Canine Practice’ was inaugurated here on Thursday.
In his inaugural address, M. Naganathan, vice-chairman, State Planning Commission, said Americans provided special care to their pets; this was evident from the amount spent on pet care and food items. While in India, the people used the food resources judiciously to feed the pets instead of spending on pet foods made by multinational companies.
Dr. Naganathan said that as per 2004 statistics, there were 27 lakh dogs in the State, and Chennai accounted for 39,878. Kanyakumari district topped the list with nearly six lakh dogs, while Ramanathapuram recorded the lowest dog population of 15,855. The veterinary centres in districts successfully carried out an immunisation programme that led to a rapid decline in rabies mortality rates among humans.
Studies indicated that rearing animals would reduce stress among people.
P. Thangaraju, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Veteinary and Animal Sciences University, was present
