CHENNAI: A writ petition, fearing danger to the lives of the Russian crew of a ship carrying steel pipes and challenging the arbitrary refusal of permission for docking of the vessel at the Chennai port, has been filed in the Madras High Court. Justice V. Dhanapalan, before whom it came up for admission on Wednesday, ordered notices to the port authorities and adjourned the matter to February 11 for further hearing. Refused berth facilitiesThe petition, filed by a Cyprus-based company, contended that the ship carrying 638 tonnes of steel pipes for public sector undertakings arrived at the Chennai port on January 19. The port authorities refused berth facilities, on January 24, on the ground that the Bombay High Court had passed an order of arrest against the ship. The petitioner said the order pertained only to the vessel and not to the consignment. In the past, the port had permitted loading/discharging of cargo while the vessel was under the arrest by court orders. The company said there was an acute shortage of freshwater and fuel on the ship, and the life of the crew was in danger. It prayed for a direction to the authorities to allot a berth to the ship and discharge the cargo.
