HYDERABAD: The fourth junior National hockey championship (under-18) begins on Friday at the Gachibowli Stadium here with no clear favourite, mainly due to its sheer magnitude — both in terms of number of teams (38) and number of matches (80 in the league phase itself). Not surprisingly, N. Chandrasekhar, coach of the Mumbai team, said it is one of the toughest events for the boys who are determined to prove a point or two as it also happens to be the selection tournament to pick the Indian team for the forthcoming junior Asia Cup. “It doesn’t matter whether Mumbai won the first edition or finished a quarterfinalist or a semifinalist in the last edition. What is important for us is how well we sustain our excellence over a period of time,” he said. It is a view also echoed by Narinderpal Singh, coach of Hyderabad.
The groupings: Group ‘A’: SAIL, Haryana, Puducherry, Chandigarh, Air-India. Group ‘B’: Namdhari, MP Hockey Academy, Bihar, J & K, Mizoram. Group ‘C’: Orissa, Assam, Kerala, Mumbai, Bengal. Group ‘D’: Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Uttaranchal, Bhopal. Group ‘E’: Services, Punjab, Vidarbha, Gujarat, Delhi. Group ‘F’: Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra. Group ‘G’: SAI (combined), Madhya Bharat, Chandigarh Academy, Tripura, Karnataka. Group ‘H’: Andhra, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad.
