Mangroves to be grown in coastal districts

Communities to be involved in mangrove conservation

They will help prevent floods, erosion of shoreline


Jalady (Udupi district): Abhijeet Dasgupta, Principal Secretary, Department of Forests and Environment, said on Wednesday that the department would launch a programme of growing mangroves in coastal districts of the State at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.

Speaking to presspersons before inaugurating the “Kandla Samrakshana Koota” (Mangroves Conservation Club) and laying the foundation stone for a Mangrove Information Centre to disseminate information about the conservation of mangroves here, Mr. Dasgupta said that local communities would be involved in the programme as they played a key role in preventing shoreline from erosion and maintaining marine ecosystem.

M.H.A. Sheikh, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, said efforts were on to develop and conserve mangroves on 900 hectares of land in Kundapur, Mangalore, Honavar and Karwar forest divisions.

Rajkumar Srivastava, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Kundapur Division, said 300 hectares (three sq. km) of mangroves were being developed in Udupi district. Sunderbans in West Bengal had the largest concentration of mangroves spread over 1.1 lakh hectares.
