‘Tamil Nadu yet to take practical stand’

Staff Reporter

On Mullaperiyar dam issue

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tamil Nadu is yet to take a practical stand on the Mullaperiyar issue. For discussions between Kerala and Tamil Nadu on this matter to succeed, the latter should be amenable to compromises.

If Tamil Nadu agrees to the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar, the whole issue can be resolved very fast, Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran said.

He was speaking to mediapersons after inaugurating a project office of the JNNURM scheme, here on Thursday.

The government of Kerala is yet to receive a copy of the letter to the Prime Minister by Water Resources Minister of Tamil Nadu Duraimurugan in which he opposed the idea of a joint monitoring mechanism at Mullaperiyar.

“That letter, I gather, states that the dam will remain sturdy for some years more. Tamil Nadu has not said for how long,” Mr. Premachandran said.

“Measuring the seepage water from the dam alone will not give a correct picture of its safety. Once the state government gets a copy of the letter sent to the Prime Minister, it will craft its response.”

The Mullaperiyar case will come for hearing at the Supreme Court on February 26. The State is preparing all necessary documents on this matter, Mr. Premachandran added.
