NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader and Nasirpur MLA Mahabal Mishra on Thursday demanded immediate arrest of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Raj Thackeray under the National Security Act for his utterances that purportedly led to attacks on North Indians in Mumbai. Seeking intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the matter, Mr. Mishra also urged the Union Home Minister to direct the Maharashtra Government to take strict measures to prevent any kind of violence or targeting of North Indians by the MNS cadres. Condemning the attack on North Indians, particularly people belonging to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the Congress leader said it was shocking that Raj Thackeray was roaming freely despite indulging in such blatant violation of the law. The Maharashtra Government should immediately take him into custody and slap charges on him for “intimidation, disturbing communal harmony, peace and law and order in the State”, Mr. Mishra said, adding that he would soon forward a representation to the Election Commission to immediately disqualify MNS and start criminal proceedings against its leaders. He demanded compensation for the people whose properties were destroyed and free medical treatment for those injured. “No State or individual can live in isolation and this is what people like Raj Thackeray have to understand,” he added.
