HYDERABAD: Karnataka surprised last year’s runner-up, Combined Sports Authority of India XI 2-1 in the preliminary round of the fourth junior National hockey championship for boys (under-18) here on Friday. Karnataka shot into the lead seizing the one good chance that came its way. Anticipating well, striker Md. Nayeemuddin positioned himself perfectly for a measured cross from the right, confused custodian Amanullah with a couple of feints before essaying the ball into the right corner in the 17th minute. Just before half-time, SAI levelled the scores when the referee pointed to the ‘spot’ after one of the Karnataka defenders carried the ball. Rahul converted. On resumption, Karnataka dictated terms showing a lot of cohesion in the forwardline comprising Chandan Aind, Bidappa, Mudappa and Md. Nayeemuddin. In the 56th minute, Karnataka scored the winner through Nayeemuddin. In other matches, Punjab trounced Vidarbha 22-1 while Chandigarh drubbed Puducherry 23-0. The results: Karnataka 2 (Md.
