Newborn Goan babies to be screened for deformities
Special Correspondent
PANAJI: Goa is set to become the first State in the country to have mandatory screening of newborn babies for deformities.
A proposal in this regard was approved by the State Cabinet early this week. Health Minister Vishwajit Rane had been pursuing the issue seriously for some time.
The screening of newborn babies will be carried out in all government hospitals and later can be extended to private hospitals as well. All treatable disorders will be identified during the screening within 48 hours of birth of babies and take corrective measures. The Cabinet also approved an amendment to the law to safeguard properties of NRIs of Goan origin.
