For better order: A policeman regulates traffic in Puducherry. — PUDUCHERRY: As part of the traffic awareness programme, the Police Department plans to organise a camp to issue learner’s licence to residents of Puducherry. “An intensive traffic awareness programme will be conducted during the course of this month. One of the major initiatives as part of the programme is to issue learner’s licence to eligible persons, who reside in Puducherry region. The schedule of the campaign will be announced shortly,” a senior traffic police officer said. Candidates interested in obtaining the licence could register on that particular day and take a driving test, which would be conducted by the personnel from the Road Transport Department, he said. The camp would be held for the whole day during the week-long campaign. Several programmes such as street plays, rallies, study classes, distribution of pamphlets, competitions for school children and health camps for drivers are being lined up for the campaign. Policemen in street playsInteresting part of the campaign would be the street plays performed by the policemen. Skits to highlight various aspects of road safety and inculcate a sense of traffic awareness among the public would be staged in various parts of the town and its outskirts. A group of policemen have been trained in fine arts to perform the skit, he added. For driversSeparate traffic classes would be conducted for autorickshaw, truck and bus drivers during night hours as part of the programme. There would lessons on traffic rules, road safety and first aid, the officer said. Besides these activities, several rallies involving school children, NCC cadets and friends of police are being planned. The awareness campaign was taken up following a directive from the government, he said. The traffic police planned to intensify vehicle checks after the campaign was over. The government had assured to provide more men for traffic duty, he added.
