Demand to extend rail booking time

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: The demand to extend railway ticket reservation time at the Friends Janasevana Kendra here has gained strength with the people sending memoranda to Ministers, MPs, MLAs and Railway officials.

Though the Friends centre functions from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on all days, the railway reservation time has been restricted between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. “The railway reservation link at the Friends centre goes offline at 1 p.m., as a result of which even those in the queue have to return without booking their tickets,” said T.M. Haris, manager of Friends.

The Railways had earlier turned down the demand on the ground that Friends did not have enough bookings.

However, Mr. Harris pointed out that there has been a steady increase in railway reservations over the last several years. The number of railway passengers using the Friends centre touched an all-time high of 4,974 last month, generating a revenue of Rs. 17.72 lakh for the Railway. At present, Tirur is the only railway station in Malappuram district that offers 12-hour reservation facility (from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.).
