K. Rajaram dead

CHENNAI/SALEM: K. Rajaram, former Speaker of the Assembly and Minister in Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam governments, died in Salem on Friday. He was 82.
Mr. Rajaram was born in 1926 in Dharmapuri, then in the composite Salem district. While he was a student in Salem Municipal College, he was drawn towards EVR’s ideology and toured various countries along with him.
He joined the DMK when it was formed by Annadurai and was instrumental in the growth of the party at the initial stage in Salem district.
Elected Speaker
He was elected to Parliament twice and was the Assembly Speaker once. As Minister in DMK and AIADMK governments, he held major portfolios.
Governor Surjit Singh Barnala in his condolence message said he was deeply shocked and grieved to hear about Rajaram’s death.
Known for simplicity
He was known for his simplicity and humbleness and had excelled in whatever position he held. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.
Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said he was shocked to hear the death of Rajaram who was one of the earliest leaders of the Dravidian movement. Pattali Makkal Katchi leader S. Ramadoss said as a Speaker, he was respected by MLAs belonging to all political parties.
