Oommen Chandy KASARAGOD: Miscreants disrupted a public meeting of Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy at Palakunnu at Uduma in the district on Friday evening. Mr. Chandy’s car was damaged in stone throwing. However, the police cordoned off Mr. Chandy and he escaped unhurt. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala alleged that activists of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) were behind the attack. The stone throwing began when the public meeting was about to begin. The meeting was held at the conclusion of a citizen rights protection rally organised by the United Democratic Front (UDF) from Bekal to Uduma in protest against the alleged attacks by CPI(M) workers on UDF workers and sympathisers. Several persons and policemen were injured in the stone throwing. In the ensuing violence, several houses and shops in the area were attacked and damaged. Activists of the UDF also retaliated in some places. Mr. Chennithala said the law and order situation in the district had deteriorated to such a level that even the Leader of the Opposition was being denied freedom of speech. He demanded strict action against the culprits. He war ned that the UDF would resort to strong agitation if the attackers were not arrested.
