Media awards for gender sensitisation

Special Correspondent

Award instituted to highlight efforts of different media in supporting the issue

HYDERABAD: Mumbai-based NGO, Population First, in association with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Chennai-based NGO Catalyst Trust announced here on Friday the launch of UNFPA-Laadli media awards for gender sensitivity for the southern region.

Addressing a press conference here, representative of Population First A.L. Sharada said that the award had been instituted to acknowledge and highlight the efforts of different media organisations supporting and participating in gender sensitisation.

Advertising (print, electronic – TV, radio – ads), news stories, editorials, features and special stories in television news channels, which analysed the value of girl children, challenges in social, economic and political developments and interpreted to mobilise public opinion would be eligible for the awards.

Seven categories

The awards were given in seven categories.

English and regional languages, including Telugu, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam, would be considered for the awards, said Dr. Sharada.

The NGOs were fighting against the female foeticide, non-implementation of PC-PNDT Act and girl child abuse.

Lok Satta president N. Jayaprakash Narayan said that he was particularly supporting the movements espousing the cause of girl child, for their future should not be endangered.

If female foeticide continued, there would be anarchy. Females would be gripped by insecurity due to sociological dangers.

There were enough laws to protect the girl children and the same should be implemented, he added.
