More facilities at water distribution stations
K. Lakshmi
CHENNAI: Civil works to provide additional facilities at the four water distribution stations to augment city water supply are under way.
The four water distribution stations at K. K. Nagar, Kilpauk, Southern Headworks and Anna Poonga are bustling with construction activity to either build additional overhead tanks or underground tanks. The project is funded under Jawaharlal Nehru National Renewal Mission.
A Metrowater official said upgradation of the water distribution stations would mean improved water supply covering tail-end pockets in the respective zones. The distribution station at K.K.Nagar would get an additional over-head tank of 2.4 million litre capacity and 14 ml capacity underground tank at a cost of Rs.24.5 crore. Kilpauk Water Works would get a new OHT of 9 ml capacity and 46 ml underground tank facility to supply exclusively to Kilpauk and its neighbouring areas, including Anna Nagar. At present, it supplied to areas such as Triplicane and even north Chennai that would be distributed to the areas by the respective water distribution stations. The cost of rehabilitating the Kilpauk Water Works is estimated to be Rs.51 crore and the project would be completed in October 2009.
