News Analysis
* * The first two paragraphs in a report “Snowfall leaves Pashmina goats fodderless” (February 8, 2008) were “Nearly one lakh goats whose wool is used to make Kashmir’s famed Pashmina shawls are among 1.50 animals facing death in the Ladakh region on the India-China border due to heavy snowfall …. “These pastures, according to reports from Leh, are spread over 22,000 square kilometres and about 1.50 animals, most of them rare goats, are stuck in the area.” It should have been “1.50 lakh animals”. * * The first two paragraphs in a report “More LPG to be imported to counter shortage” (February 7, 2008) were: “Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora on Wednesday said the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) had decided to make an additional import of nearly 30 million tonnes of LPG during February and March to overcome LPG shortage in the country. “Speaking on the sidelines of the International Conference on Gas Hydrates at Noida, on the outskirts of Delhi, Mr. Deora said that for 2007, LPG imports of 2.4 million tonnes had been tied up but in view of the shortfall, new imports were ordered.” The Special Correspondent clarifies that it was an error and that it should have been “30 Thousand Metric Tonnes (TMT.)” “Tonne” is a metric unit of measurement and the prefix is needed only if “ton” is used.
