Zaman triumphs

Amitabha Das Sharma

KOLKATA: Mansoor Zaman was indomitable as he knocked off the challenge of second-seeded Ong Beng Hee in the final of the Kolkata international squash here on Friday.

The title clash of the three-star PSA event saw the Pakistani put up a flawless display of touch and aggression that left his Malaysian opponent groping for the right reply.

Zaman could have swept the final in straight games but a minor lapse in focus helped Beng Hee to win a game and make the scoreline look respectable.

Improves ranking

The win not only gave Zaman his first title of the year but also the reassurance of getting back to the top position in the world rankings.

“I feel I am getting back to the rhythm now,” said Zaman.

Zaman, who seemed to pick up from where he left off in his semifinal, looked even better while fine-tuning a wide array of returns that took his opponent totally off guard.

Total control

Zaman’s authority was total in the first two games where he produced winners at will by accomplishing a variety of shots in a front-court game.

Getting to play more in his favoured territory, the back-court, Beng Hee reduced the margin of by winning the third game.

Uncharacteristic errors from Zaman also made things easier for the Malaysian.

The initiative was back with the Pakistani when he started getting his placing right in the fourth game.

Beng Hee led 6-4 at one stage but hit four successive negative points to give the advantage back to Zaman (8-4), who coasted to victory from that point.

Zaman earned $4873 and 487 ranking points for winning his first high-value PSA title outside Pakistan after the injury.
