Publication expected on February 22 97.87% of electors covered so far CHENNAI: The preparation of final photo electoral rolls (for the current summary revision with January 1, 2008, as the qualification date) will be over by March 5 in the State. Addressing mediapersons here on Friday, Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said that except the Tambaram and Alandur Assembly constituencies and the 37 parts in the Assembly constituencies of Royapuram, Dr. Radhakrishna Nagar, Purasawalkam and Thousand Lights in Chennai district, the publication of the rolls was expected on February 22. The delay in the case of the above mentioned constituencies was due to incorrect images of electors and other discrepancies. These were being set right and the entire exercise of preparing the final electoral rolls would be completed by March 5. The final rolls would be available on the Internet but without the images of the electors. The coverage of electors with images in the rolls had reached 97.87 per cent. Mr. Gupta said that at a recent meeting of CEOs in New Delhi, the Election Commission reviewed the status of electoral rolls, 2008, preparation of photo rolls and discussed the approach for rationalisation of polling stations and realignment of electoral rolls that would be necessitated once the delimitation of constituencies came into effect. In future, all electoral registration officers, district electoral officers and Chief Electoral Officer would have to furnish a certificate stating that there was no inconsistency in the electoral rolls. If there was anything unusual, they would have to give an explanatory note before the rolls are cleared by the Election Commission for final publication. For this purpose the Election Commission would appoint observers on a regional basis (one observer for 5 to 6 districts) for overseeing the updating of the rolls and tackling the cases of surplus and missing names and multiple entries. There would be one exclusive officer for Chennai metro, he said.
