Government hospitals to get new buildings

Identified works to commence in

three months

Medicines worth Rs.70.18 lakh supplied to patients


KARUR: Government hospitals in Karur district are all set to get new buildings worth Rs.6.05 crore during the current year.

Joint Director of Health K. Govindasamy said that the funds would be allotted under the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project for the construction of the new buildings for the medical facilities including government hospitals, primary health centres and health sub centres in the district. Identified works would commence in three months, he added. The Joint Director was speaking at an awareness seminar on “Sanitation and HIV/AIDS Management” conducted here as part of the ongoing multimedia exhibition.

Dr. Govindasamy said that a total of 2,168 persons have been identified as afflicted with HIV/AIDS in the district so far through testing at the Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centres at the Karur and Kulithalai Government Hospitals as also at the Pallapatti Primary Health Centre.

Aravakurichi and Krishnarayapuram taluk hospitals have already put in place the VCTCs and, importantly, he said that the VCTC facility would now be extended to cover all the primary health centres in the district and that would be a major milestone in HIV detection and management in Karur district, he added.

Stating that on an average, medicines worth Rs.70.18 lakh were being supplied to patients in Karur district through the government medical facilities, Dr. Govindasamy said that anti-rabies vaccines worth Rs.32 lakh were administered last year.

The Personal Assistant to Collector (Panchayat Development) Padmanabhan, Medical Officer S.M. Manivannan, secretary of the Network of Positives Uma, AIDS Project Manager Arul Prakasam, representatives from voluntary organizations including Gramium and SAATHI were among those who spoke.
