Tension prevails at Berhampur varsity

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Tension prevailed on the campus of Berhampur University on Friday due to agitation by students’ union demanding release of a student arrested from the university hostel by police.

Led by president of the union Jhasaketan Padhi and its secretary Purna Chandra Das, the agitating students sat on a dharna in front of the academic block of the university since morning.

Neither classes nor the offices of the university were allowed to function by the agitating students.

They also threatened to launch an indefinite strike to get their three demands fulfilled.

They wanted action against the police officer who was behind the arrest of the student, release of the arrested student and promise from the police as well as the university administration that police would not enter the hostels without proper permission from the disciplinary committee.

The student was arrested following an attack on another student on Wednesday evening on the campus. But students alleged that the arrested student was not involved in the attack.

The University Syndicate sat for an emergency meeting in the evening to sort out the students’ unrest.

Four representatives of the students, including Mr Padhi, Mr Das, Rabinarayan Das and Madhusudan Bhuyan attended the syndicate meeting to put forth the view point of students.

Superintendent of Police Nitinjeet Singh also rushed to the university.

Students called off their agitation following an assurance given by the police and university administration.
