BHUBANESWAR: Orissa unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday said conversion was the main reason behind the recent communal violence in Kandhamal district of the State. In a political resolution that was adopted at the end of the party’s two-day State executive committee meeting here, the party also condemned the alleged attack on Vishwa Hindu Parishad activist Swami Laksmanananda in the wake of the violence in Kandhamal. The party further criticised the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and Left parties “for showing their concern for the minority community to draw political mileage”. The party demanded that the Orissa Freedom of Religion Act should be strictly implemented in the State. The government should keep a close watch on the activities of missionary organisations and non-government organisations, the party demanded. Quota opposedThe party also strongly opposed the United Progressive Alliance Government’s move to grant reservation to the backward people belonging to the minority communities. Moreover, the party also criticised the Congress-led government at the Centre for denying Orissa its due in various fields. I t also blamed the Central Government for not taking effective measures to contain the growth of naxalism in the country.
