PATNA: Angry farmers on Friday threw stones at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at Pilkhi village in Nalanda district, protesting against “meagre compensation” for fertile land acquired for the proposed Nalanda International University.
The incident occurred when the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Visitor, was attending a board of directors meeting.
Earlier, the farmers from Pilkhi and neighbouring villages raised slogans against the Chief Minister and District Magistrate Anand Kishore. Despite attempts by officials to calm them, the protest continued. As Mr. Kumar came out of the meeting and approached the farmers, they threw stones and whatever they could lay hands on.
However, security personnel shielded him and he escaped unhurt.
The police resorted to a lathi-charge and dispersed the crowd.
Mr. Kumar expressed distress over the incident, and directed district officials to look into the matter raised by the farmers and end the impasse that troubled the people in his native district.
The villagers were also upset at district officials making them run from pillar to post to receive promised money.
The government has so far acquired 450 acres of land for the university campus.
