Manmohan promises loan relief for farmers
Pravaranagar (Ahmednagar): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here on Friday that the government would soon come out with loan relief measures for farmers.
“I am aware that farmers in many parts of the country are suffering under the burden of mounting loans. The Finance Minister is going to take a decision shortly on some relief for farmers,” he said at a function that was attended by a large number of agriculturists in this western Maharashtra town.
Noting that the United Progressive Alliance government accorded top priority to farmers’ problems, he said fluctuating sugar prices in the last three years had caused hardships to the sector. “In view of this, we have been giving special attention to this problem, with a provision of a big relief package for sugar mills.”
Dr. Singh released a commemorative postal stamp in memory of noted economist Dhananjayrao Gadgil.
The latter had teamed up with Vitthal Vikhe Patil to start the first cooperative sugar factory in Asia in 1950. — PTI
