PLEA FOR A ROOF: D. Uthirakkumaran receiving petitions from coastal residents demanding houses.

PUDUKOTTAI: Sensing the growing demand for housing for tsunami-hit fishermen, the district administration has decided to construct 2,401 more houses under the World Bank-funded Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Package (ETRP) programme.

The district administration has been receiving petitions from the fishermen and elected representatives pleading for construction of houses.

At an official function held at Manamelkudi, about 70 km from here recently, Collector D. Uthirakkumaran received a large number of petitions from men, women and representatives of fishermen’s association pleading for inclusion of their names in the package for construction of houses.

A decision to construct the additional 2,401 houses was taken following the increase in demand.

The rise in demand was witnessed, especially after the work on the construction of 2,346 houses was taken up last month under the Asian Development Bank-funded ‘Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Package’ (RGRP) programme. Each house will be built at a cost of Rs. 2.38 lakh and the work will be executed in 15 packages.

The Collector said that work on maintenance and minor repairs would be taken up at 13 village panchayat offices located in coastal areas at an expenditure of Rs. 49.43 lakhs under the Tsunami Emergency Assistance Project.

Further, a sum of Rs.1.5 crore had been sanctioned for providing roads in six packages in the coastal parts of these taluks.

Already, work had been taken up to the tune of Rs.1.35 crore.
