No escape: Labourers take a break at India Gate fully shielded for the cold windy afternoon in New Delhi on Friday. NEW DELHI: Appearing increasingly like an ordeal without an end, the cold on Friday continued to wrap the Capital in its windy embrace, setting loose icy cold north-westerly gusts that sent people scurrying for cover. Warming effectThough a partial cloud cover pitched the day’s minimum temperature at 9 degrees Celsius, brisk winds all but nullified any possible warming effect. The maximum temperature recorded was 16.8 degrees. The Meteorological Department has forecast a minimum temperature of around 6 degrees for Saturday along with mist in the morning. Thursday dawned bleak and morose, particularly so for early-morning commuters who had to bear the brunt of the wind. Shallow fogA shallow fog made its eerie presence felt till almost noon and lifted only once a few stray rays of the sun peeked out from behind the cloud cover. “Will this season never come to an end,” lamented an office-goer Sunny Wilson, adding that “it is especially tough on those who commute on two-wheelers and are exposed to the cold”. Though the local weatherman has forecast a minimum temperature of 6 degrees, the BBC website maintained a figure of around 4 degrees Celsius. A particularly bizarre winter, this season has been characterised by repeated comebacks of the cold interspersed with brief spells of relative warmth.
