H.K. Narayan passes away

Bangalore: H.K. Narayan, noted Sugama Sangeeta composer and singer, died on Friday after a prolonged illness. He was 72.

He is survived by wife and two daughters.

Mr. Narayan worked with All India Radio for nearly four decades and played a vital role in popularising the genre of Sugama Sangeeta, which uses music as a vehicle to take poetry close to people. Among his best known compositions are “Nadavirada Baduke” by Nissar Ahmed, “Brudavanake Haalanu Maaralu” by Kuvempu and “Shubha Nudiye Shakunada Hakki” by Da. Ra. Bendre.

He composed and sung for scores of Kannada cassettes and CDs. Mr. Narayan, a native of Holenarasipur in Hassan district, received several awards, including the Pampa Award.
