BANGALORE: Even as Bangaloreans are getting used to the recent upward revision of auto fare, many autorickshaw drivers on Friday held a demonstration in front of the Road Transport Office, Koramangala, demanding further revision in the autorickshaw fare. General secretary of Autorickshaw Drivers’ Union B.A. Raghavendra said the minimum fare of Rs. 14 fixed now was not sufficient to meet their expenses, and wanted the minimum fare to be Rs. 20. Submitting a memorandum to the government, the union placed a new formula by which the fare per km would be Rs. 8. It said a fare of Rs. 12 could be taken for travel within a distance of 1.5 km. For any further distance, a fare of Rs. 8 per km could be collected. The union said that the drivers would not recalibrate their meters to the new fare till a decision was taken on revising the minimum fare. Digital metersThere was another demonstration asking the government to make autorickshaw drivers adopt digital meters. The Bangalore City Youth Congress Committee members, who held the demonstration in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue, said making digital meters mandatory would prevent harassment of commuters by autorickshaw drivers to a large extent. “Digital meters show the distance covered to enable passengers to calculate the fare,” said S. Manohar, president of the Bangalore City Youth Congress Committee.
