CHENNAI: Works relating to the Nandivaram-Guduvancheri irrigation, which have already been taken up and to be undertaken, should be completed within three months, the State Human Rights Commission has said. The District Collector, Kancheepuram, and the Director of Town Panchayats should inform the Commission after the works are completed, the rights body said. The Commission Bench, comprising its Chairperson, Justice A.S. Venkatachalamoorthy and Members Justice S. Thangaraj, A.R. Selvakumar and S. Paramasivan, took suo motu cognisance of a news item in The Hindu in September last year that the total area of the tank is expected to shrink owing to continuous dumping of garbage. The Commission directed the Collector and the director to enquire and submit a report. The Collector said the director and assistant director of Town Panchayats had inspected the site and based on their advice, the Nandivaram-Guduvancheri Town Panchayat had taken steps to remove the garbage dumped in the Esa Eri (the tank). Subsequently, the Director of Town Panchayats submitted a report stating that the town panchayat had removed the garbage dumped in the tank; garbage was being dumped in Medavakkam area; garbage in the burial ground situated on the tank bund had been removed and the area levelled using gravel; bushes surrounding the burial ground had been removed and steps taken to construct a compound wall for the burial ground. Tenders had been invited for constructing a cremation shed; laying a cement approach road to the burial ground and constructing a room for performing last rites.
