KOCHI: To begin with, it had no air of a literary event being held along the sidelines of an international book fair. It was colours, firecrackers and music all the way on Friday evening. And quite rightly. For it was the formal launch of Tumpi, a children’s imprint from the stable of DC Books, that was held along with the ongoing 4th DC International Book Fair. Though many of the children present to witness the launch were not aware of it, the celebrity that did the launch was Anita Nair. Who did not simply wave a magic wand to start the music and celebrations, she had four of her books written for children released on the occasion. “Nothing is more delightful than having a book as a constant companion,” she told the children, adding that she never left her home without a book in hand. “This reading culture needs to be cultivated.” She read out a small excerpt from her book Half thief and Three-quarter Thief. Earlier another segment from the story Appu and the Foolish Boy was read out. Her other titles being brought out by Tumpi are Girl and The Monkey and The Jackal and the Cat. Four more of her titles will hit the stands soon. “We look forward to bringing out 10 to 12 books every month,” said Saraswathy Rajagopal, executive director of Tumpi. With content of children’s literature either restricted to Western stories or highly-priced, Tumpi is aiming at re-telling Indian contents without compromising on quality. “Along with original stories, we mean to approach the existing contents in different point of view,” said Ms. Rajagopal.
