Seven persons killed and nine injured in accident

THENI: Seven persons, including two children, were killed when their car collided head-on with a lorry coming from the opposite direction on Madurai-Theni national highway near an engineering college at Andipatti on Saturday evening.

Five persons died on the spot.

Bride Hemalatha (20), daughter of Gunasekaran of Cumbum, and her relatives Rangasamy (70), Geetha (40), Ilangovan (48), Suresh (40), Sarvesh (5) and Sanju (4) were killed.

Lorry cleaner Gnanavel and car driver Senthil, Nagalakshmi (35), Murugan (40), Naveen (7), Madhumitha (8), Yuva Rani (27), Jegatha (18) and Revathi (35), who travelled in the car, were admitted to Theni Government Medical College Hospital.

The police and local people rescued the injured from the mangled remains of the car and sent them to the hospital.

The team was proceeding to Madurai for wedding at Jaihindpuram in Madurai on Sunday.

Traffic was disrupted for long.

Deputy Inspector General of Police R.R. Krishnamurthy visited the spot.
