Staff Reporter

58 underground reservoirs to be commissioned in Delhi by March next year

Chief Minister promises piped drinking water supply to homes

“Supply through tankers would soon become history”

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday said that once Delhi gets its allocated share of water for the Nangloi treatment plant from Haryana, water in adequate quantity will be supplied to areas in Outer Delhi.

Ms. Dikshit said after the plant starts working at its optimal capacity, the Delhi Jal Board would ensure supply of drinking water to all by commissioning 58 underground reservoirs by March 2009. She was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of an underground reservoir and booster pumping station at Pitampura here.

Promising piped drinking water supply to homes, Ms. Dikshit said supply through tankers would soon become history. Equitable distribution of drinking water would provide relief to a large number of residents in new and upcoming colonies, she added. Referring to development works undertaken by her government, Ms. Dikshit said 28 foot-over bridges in various part of the Capital would be constructed by March this year, which will provide safe and secure passage to pedestrians.

She said her government had also undertaken the responsibility of constructing 4 lakh low-cost houses for the weaker sections of society.

Delhi Jal Board Chief Executive Officer Arun Mathur said that in order to rationalise water distribution in West Delhi, North-West Delhi, South-West Delhi and Central Delhi, 25 underground reservoirs and booster pumps would be constructed at various locations.

He said the Jal Board had approved a scheme allocating Rs.263 crore for construction of 14 underground reservoir and booster pumps.

The work for construction of the underground reservoir/booster pumps in Pitampura has been awarded to Offshore Limited and would be completed in 17 months. Water for this underground reservoir will be sourced from the Haiderpur treatment plant and after being commissioned it will benefit about 2.5 lakh families in Badli, Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh and Haiderpur villages.
