NEW DELHI: To create public awareness about the growing threat of breast cancer in Asia, Delhi is playing host to a “Walk for Life” at Nehru Park here this Sunday. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur will flag off the 5-km walk at 9 a.m. A large number of people are expected to take part in the walk that has been sponsored by non-government organisation CanSupport. Meanwhile, the “First Asian Breast Cancer Congress” opened at Hotel Ashok here on Saturday. Over 350 researchers and doctors from across the country and the U.S. are taking part in the two-day Congress. “My wife, my hero”The U.S. Ambassador to India, David C. Mulford, introduced the chief guest, Jeannie Mulford -- who is a breast cancer survivor -- as “my wife, my hero”. In her remarks, Ms. Mulford paid tribute to the doctors, surgeons and medical professionals gathered in Delhi including “the capable and compassionate” Dr. Hiram Cody, her own surgeon. “Following my diagnosis and treatment, I have spoken to dozens of women of many nationalities throughout America and India who have faced the same battle,” said Ms. Mulford, adding that “while it is a sisterhood none of us would have chosen, we are committed to working as partners to help other women who face the same fight to receive the early diagnosis and treatment that will let them lead full lives”.
