Preparations on for Lakkundi Utsav

Seminars on history and heritage of Gadag

to be held


GADAG: Preparations are in full swing for the Lakkundi Utsav scheduled to be held at Lakkundi in Gadag district on February 16 and 17.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Deputy Commissioner of Gadag N. Sriraman said that steps had been taken to highlight the literary and cultural tradition of the region during the two-day event. Mr. Sriraman, who is also the chairman of the executive committee of the utsav, said that Rs. 30 lakh was expected to be spent for the utsav, and the State Government had released Rs. 10 lakh for the purpose.

The district administration had Rs. 8 lakh with it from the funds sanctioned for the last year’s festival, he said. Meanwhile, Gadag Zilla Panchayat had submitted a proposal to the Government seeking the release of Rs. 5 lakh, he added.

Mr. Sriraman said noted artistes, including Usha Mangeshkar and Vasundhara Doreswamy, would be performing at the utsav. There would be a “panchaveena” performance by Vijaylaxmi and troupe of Shimoga, sugama sangeeta by Sampat Vijay and troupe, and various classical dance and music and folk art performances, he said.

Mr. Sriraman said apart from cultural programmes there would be seminars on the history and heritage of Gadag, State-level “kavi goshthi” by children and youth.

For the first time a sports meet of rural games has been organised. Meanwhile, publicity materials for the utsav, including posters, handbills, banners and stickers, were released by Mr. Sriraman, zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer B.F. Patil, Assistant Commissioner C. Shikha and Headquarters Assistant to Deputy Commissioner S.K. Patil on Friday. The utsav will be inaugurated by Chairman of the Legislative Council B.K. Chandrashekar on February 16 at 4 p.m.
