HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) State committee has asked the government to change its priorities in making budgetary allocations by earmarking more funds for education, health, welfare and development of backward areas. The 22nd State congress of the CPI(M) adopted a resolution on Saturday criticising the government for its “indifferent attitude” in providing basic amenities for the poor. Though the CPI(M) was not against irrigation projects and housing, the party wanted the government to put equal emphasis on welfare allocations which had come down significantly over the years. Briefing reporters on the second day of the three-day event, CPI(M) legislator M.A. Gafoor and senior leader Ch. Babu Rao expressed concern over the Railway Ministry not conceding the demand for new railway lines in the State to meet the growing demand from different areas. They demanded that the government take up the matter with the Centre to include State’s projects in the forthcoming budget or lead an all-party delegation to mount pressure on the Centre. The CPI(M) criticised the government’s latest move to regularise encroached lands above 2,000 sq.yds claiming that it was aimed at benefiting the rich who were illegally possessing the land.
