HYDERABAD: Overall enrolment in schools in Andhra Pradesh is 95.7 per cent while it has touched 29.3 per cent in private schools, which is higher than national average. Ninety per cent of the children have text books, note books, pens and pencils and the attendance of teachers has improved with 86.3 per cent compared to 80.6 per cent in 2005. The midday meal was found being served in all the schools and percentage of children (3-4 years) attending remained at 78.8 per cent. These are the highlights of the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2007 brought out by Pratham, a non for profit organisation working towards universalisation of primary education. ASER 2007 survey was conducted in one Government school with primary grades was visited in the sampled village in October and November last year. The report was released by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Minister M. Hanumantha Rao on Friday here. The report noted that the State had made significant progress in reading levels of children in class third to five, which was 74.7 per cent. However, the percentage of children in class one and two, who could read letters, words or more dropped to 81.3 per cent.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Hanumantha Rao said the Government is committed to ensure that all the out of school children are enrolled by 2010 to achieve the aim of universalisation of education. State Project Director, SSA, Chandramouli said that only 2.40 lakh children are out of school, which could be brought down further. National Director of Pratham, Madhav Chavan said an independent ASER Centre would be opened in the State to take up research, evaluation and training.
