Stress on mathematical study method

MAYILADUTURAI: Mathematics is the basis for all scientific phenomena and its methods for research is an ever growing field, according to Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University M. Ponnavaikko.
Inaugurating a two-day national seminar on ‘Mathematical methods for research,’ organised by the Department of Mathematics of A.V.C. College here on Friday, he defined the mathematical systems, models and research activities.
Dr. Ponnavaikko said mathematics was first developed by the Greeks followed by other countries, including India, in the early centuries after Christ. There were four important pillars to encourage team spirit — learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and learning to be a good person. At the college-level, ‘learning through discovery’ was must.
Secretary of the college committee C. Senthilvel presided. Heads of institutions M. Varadharajan ( A.V.C. College), Jonas Gunasekaran (TBML College), Thirunavukkarasu (Dharmapuram Aadheenam College) and Arun V. Parwate (A.V.C. College of Engineering) and Head of the Department of Mathematics, A.V.C. College, V.S. Selvarajan spoke.
