Against assault: CSI Christians observing fast at Vannarpet in Palayamkottai on Saturday in protest against the recent attack on Bishop Jayapaul David. TIRUNELVELI: Condemning the recent attack on Rev. S. Jayapaul David, Bishop, Church of South India, Tirunelveli diocese, over 3,500 CSI Christians, including 1,500 women, observed fast here on Saturday. As a sequel to an enmity between two factions of the diocese that worsened after the recent elections to various positions of the bishopric, the Bishop was attacked by a group of people when he came to attend the meeting of priests held at Cathedral Church last Tuesday. Protesting the attack, a section of CSI Christians, led by the Tirunelveli diocese vice-president, Christudoss, observed a fast in front of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited General Manager’s Office on South Bypass Road, Vannarpet in Palayamkottai. Speakers who addressed demanded the State Government to initiate stringent action against those who were involved in the attack. Meanwhile, A.D.J.C. Dhinakar, who contested for the post of lay secretary of Tirunelveli CSI diocese and is leading one of the factions, said in a statement that the Bishop and his team, “who flouted established norms,” alone were responsible for the present chaos prevailing in the diocese. Lasting peace would return among the CSI Christians here only if the third and fourth phase of the elections were conducted in a democratic manner, he said.
