Congress seniors fail to meet Sonia

Gargi Parsai

NEW DELHI: Telangana Congress leaders who were camping here for the last five days decided on Saturday to return to Andhra Pradesh without meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

On Tuesday, they had a meeting with members of the Congress Core Group, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and pressed their demand for separate Telangana.

The AICC officially stated earlier this week that the Pranab Mukherjee Committee was working on evolving a political consensus in the matter.

“We are pained at not getting an appointment with Ms. Gandhi but we have the hope that she will reconsider and call us (at a later date),” said G. Venkataswamy, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha and member of the CWC.

‘No threat’

The former Union Minister said he would raise the issue in Parliament and also in the CWC, adding that “they were not giving any threat” to the party. Referring obliquely to reports on the differences within the Congress on the issue, Mr. Venkataswamy said “Let Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy remain at the helm of affairs till 2009 when the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections are due.

But we want that six months prior to that the UPA government should announce the formation of Telangana to fulfil people’s aspirations.”

He said if that was done, the party would sweep the elections bagging 16 of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, without aligning with the TRS or any other party. Mr. Venkataswamy and convenor of the Telangana Congress leaders’ forum K.R. Amos claimed that the political differences were narrowing down as the CPI, BJP, Telugu Desam Party, TRS and backed the demand. Mr Amos said 2009 was the deadline, as the party had committed to give separate Telangana before that.

“We are aware we cannot get Telangana in a day or two. It is a policy decision that cannot be taken overnight,” he said.
