TAMBARAM: A two-day exhibition on archaeology concluded at Madras Christian College, Tambaram, on Friday. Organised by the Department of History, that offers a three-year programme in Archaeology and Museology, it aimed at creating interest on these subjects among higher secondary students. R. Kannan, Chief Vigilance Officer, Madras Fertilizers, inaugurated the exhibition on Thursday. He was formerly Special Commissioner and Commissioner of Government Museum, Chennai. Briefing reporters about the objective behind the exhibition, K. Dawn Stanley, Head, Department of History, said despite being an integral part of human knowledge, interest among youth in subjects like archaeology was dwindling. Those graduating in archaeology and pursuing higher studies could look for lucrative and satisfying careers in various fields such as heritage tourism and museums, apart from safeguarding the richness left behind by thousands of years of human civilisation, Mr. Stanley added. D. Charlson, Lecturer in Archaeology, said the exhibition’s theme was ‘creating awareness in antiquities and their preservation’. Teams of staff and students of archaeology conducted independent excavations in Tiruvakkarai in Villupuram district, Gundu Perumbuthur in Kancheepuram district and Adhirambakkam in Tiruvallur district from where they returned with stone fossils and fossil wood tools, which were kept on display.
