Plea to residents on garbage disposal

Staff Reporter

Brahmapuram plant to be ready soon

Councillors allotted funds to ensure cleanliness

Master plan for Kochi within six months

KOCHI: Mayor Mercy Williams has sought the help of residents’ associations in ensuring scientific disposal of garbage.

Speaking after inaugurating the Silver Jubilee celebrations of GCDA’s LIG Residents’ Welfare Association at Judges’ Avenue, Kaloor, on Saturday, she said the garbage-treatment plant at Brahmapuram would be commissioned soon and residents’ associations should cooperate with the Corporation’s plans for garbage disposal. “Many NGOs have come forward to support the plans. The Corporation has drafted a bylaw for the purpose and would begin execution of the law once it is passed in the Council. Another pressing issue is the eradication of the mosquito menace. Delay in making decisions to clean drains has compounded the problem,” she said.

All councillors have been allotted funds to ensure cleanliness in their respective division. Residents’ associations and their apex body play a crucial role in the execution of projects under the People’s Plan Programme. There is greater potential for associations, the Corporation and the police to work in tandem with one another. The proposed master plan for Kochi would be ready in six months’ time, she said. There is need for scientific and sustainable regulation of construction activities in the city, to prevent a free-for-all situation, Ms Williams said. Later, she inaugurated a stage constructed in the park at LIG colony.

Inaugurating the jubilee celebrations, Minister for Fisheries and Registration S. Sarma spoke of the role played by residents’ associations in bringing back a culture of sharing in the city.
