IMPRESSED: Visitors viewing the exhibits at ‘VISION 2008’ which began at Kadri Park in Mangalore on Saturday.

MANGALORE: The “Vision 2008”, a two-day arts and crafts exhibition by students of “Saanidhya”, a residential school and training centre for mentally challenged, got underway at Kadri Park here on Saturday.

Various products made by students of sannidhya, including paintings, items of clay, stonework and greeting cards, were on display.

The price of items ranged from Rs. 5 to Rs. 500. Clay items such as flower vases, set of candles, woollen mats, telephone covers, pouches for cellphones and pots with flower patterns painted on them bore testimony for the skills of the students and the exemplary training imparted by the teachers at the sanidhya.

Suma, arts and crafts teacher at the school, said: “Students, in spite of their disability, are able to perform most of the tasks taught to them, singularly. We assist them in giving finishing touch to the products. Some of them are capable of complete a task independently.”

Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao, who inaugurated the exhibition and the school’s website www.saanidhya.org on the occasion, said that every parent wanted their child to become self-reliant. Efforts of the organisations such as saanidhya in helping mentally retarded children become self-reliant is worth emulating. Students of NIT-K, Surathkal, who helped the organisation in developing the website, were felicitated.

S.M. Tallur, assistant general manager, State Bank of India, released a brochure, “Spandana 2008”, a three-hour non-stop cultural programme by the special children scheduled for April 20 at the T.M.A. Pai International Convention Hall on M.G. Road in Mangalore.

The proposed cultural programme is a fund raiser for a residential school for these children to come up at Shaktinagar, near here. The exhibition is open from 3 p.m. up to 8 p.m.
